The Pit Bull term was first used in the United States in 1927, and includes these breeds: American Pit Bull Terrier, American Bully, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and sometimes also the American Bulldog and certain cross bred dogs that share some physical characteristics with these breeds.
Pit Bull dogs have a reputation for being vicious due to a history of dog fighting, a high number of documented attacks over many years, and the fact they viciously and notoriously latch on when biting.
It is reported that “In the 16 year period of 2005 through 2020, canines killed 568 American. Pit Bulls contributed to 67% (380) of these deaths. Combined, Pit Bulls and Rottweilers contributed to 76% of the total recorded deaths.” [Source: DogsBite.org] Further, from 1981 to 1992, Pit bull dog types were associated with about one-third (1/3) of all dog caused fatalities in the United States. Think about all these deaths caused by Pit Bulls, which represent just 6% of total dogs and are just one of over 200 dog breeds.
It is reported that Pit Bulls are still shockingly used in dog fighting in the United States, although the practice of dog fighting is unlawful in the United States. Should you become aware of any Pit Bull dog fighting or any other dog fighting, please immediately report it to your local Police Department, your local Animal Control Department, the ASPCA (the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and or this law office.
Some Pit Bull dog owners and advocate claim these dogs make wonderful loving pets and those who are vicious are due to their owners bad dog care. The truth may be somewhere in the middle – many Pit Bull dogs reportedly make safe, sweet pets, while many are responsible for vicious attacks on both people and other dogs. This has brought up the old nature vs. nurture debate - that is, whether the aggressive and sometimes vicious actions of Pit Bulls should be attributed to the inherent genetic qualities of the breed or their owners' care and other actions (that is, providing a loving, caring, nurturing environment vs. one of dog fighting with mean punishments).
Obviously, dog bite frequency and severity varies among dog breeds, and studies have found that that Pit Bull breeds of dogs have both the highest risk of biting and also often produce the most severe injuries from their latching type of bites.
Some hospital records have shown that Pit Bulls are responsible for more than half of all dog bite incidents (attacks and bites) among all dog breeds, although Pit Bulls make-up only 6% of all dog breeds.
Further, some insurance companies will not insure Pit Bulls (and also sometimes some other breeds like Rottweilers, German Sheppards and Chows) because such breeds cause a disproportionately high rate of dog bites and dog attacks among all dog breeds.
What You Should Do If Attacked or Bit By a Pit Bull Dog
We have seen gruesome permanent injuries caused by bites from Pit Bulls and a few other dog breeds. If you or anyone in your family was bit or injured by any dog, please seek immediate medical attention, take photos of the injuries, dog and location if possible, and try to ascertain the identity of the dog owner(s) and place of residence. Report the incident to the local Animal Control and if you do not where or what to do, call us now at 1.866 INJURY 2 or contact us here. There is often liability insurance covering dog bite injuries and damages, or a wrongful death injury claim when a family member is killed by a Pit Bull or pack of Pit Bulls, such as Homeowners Insurance or Apartment Tenant Insurance. Unfortunately, as stated above, some insurance companies exclude Pit Bulls and some other dog breeds. So please contact us right away for your FREE consultation and case evaluation. There are time limits and procedural rules so please do not delay. Contact us now. You will be glad that you did!

We had two prior attorneys who were unable to settle our car accident case. We then hired Gary and Robert Walch and they not only got us both great settlements, but personally spent time with us explaining everything clearly. We couldn't be happier. Thank you! A.M. and M.A.
