What is Vagina Mesh and how is it Used?

Vaginal Mesh or Vagina Mesh is a surgical mesh used in surgery to reinforce areas where tissue is damaged, specifically in female pelvic organs. The mesh is created from animal tissues or synthetic materials. Other types of surgical mesh have been used for years to repair hernias. With Vaginal mesh, during surgery, the mesh is implanted into the organs or tissue to provide support for weakened tissue and organ walls. Vagina mesh is used to treat several conditions including:

• Pelvic Organ Prolapse: Vagina mesh is most commonly used to treat Pelvic Organ Prolapse (often called POP) which is a disorder that affects the pelvic floor. When POP occurs in a patient, pelvic organs are weakened to the point they begin to collapse down into the vagina. This disorder is very common among women and can even be caused by child birth. When POP occurs, it is often treated with surgery. During the surgery, vagina mesh was often used as a way to strengthen the vaginal wall and reinforce damaged pelvic tissues.
• Stress Urinary Incontinence: Vaginal or vagina mesh is also used to treat Stress Urinary Incontinence (also referred to as SUI) which is when the bladder unintentionally leaks when it is put under stress due to pressure from physical activities or even coughing and sneezing.
