What is Vagina Mesh and how is it Used?Vaginal Mesh or Vagina Mesh is a surgical mesh used in surgery to reinforce areas where tissue is damaged, specifically in female pelvic organs. The mesh is created from animal tissues or synthetic materials. Other types of surgical mesh have been used for years to repair hernias. We have a separate section and discussion on Hernia Mesh cases. LINK WHEN SET UP
With Vaginal mesh, during surgery, the mesh is implanted into the organs or tissue to provide support for weakened tissue and organ walls. Vagina mesh is used to treat several conditions including:
- Pelvic Organ Prolapse: Vagina mesh is most commonly used to treat Pelvic Organ Prolapse (often called POP) which is a disorder that affects the pelvic floor. When POP occurs in a patient, pelvic organs are weakened to the point they begin to collapse down into the vagina. This disorder is very common among women and can even be caused by child birth. When POP occurs, it is often treated with surgery. During the surgery, vagina mesh was often used as a way to strengthen the vaginal wall and reinforce damaged pelvic tissues.
- Stress Urinary Incontinence: Vaginal or vagina mesh is also used to treat Stress Urinary Incontinence (also referred to as SUI) which is when the bladder unintentionally leaks when it is put under stress due to pressure from physical activities or even coughing and sneezing. Like POP, one way to treat SUI is through surgery, in which vagina mesh is used. The mesh is implanted through the vagina to provide reinforcement to the urethra in order to prevent urine leaks.

In early 2019, the FDA stopped all sales of vagina mesh in the United States. This is because of the risk of serious side effects that can occur in women who have Vagina Mesh implanted to help with POP or SUI. The mesh has been found to erode inside the body causing severe pain. Hundreds of thousands of women have suffered side effects that include:
- Chronic pain in the pelvic region
- Permanent incontinence or other urinary issues
- Painful intercourse
- Infection due to edges of the mesh cutting into tissue or organs
- Back and stomach pain
- Vaginal bleeding
Additionally, a study conducted by Dr. Shlomo Raz, a professor of Urology and Pelvic Reconstruction at UCLA Medical School, which university one of our partners attended, showed that other complications included “’lupus-type’ [complications] causing runny nose, muscle pain, fogginess, and lethargy.” He found that after removing the mesh, “patients are cured of these [lupus-type] complications”, illustrating that the mesh is responsible. Thousands of patients have sought removal of the mesh due to the serious complications it caused in their lives. However, patients that need the mesh removed must endure yet another painful surgery.
The vaginal mesh, even if removed, often causes further damage to the pelvic organs and tissues that can be irreversible.
Vagina Mesh LitigationDue to these serious and painful side effects of using vaginal mesh in surgeries, many women are now bringing claims against the makers of vaginal mesh. The women (referred to as plaintiffs) argue that the companies that made vaginal mesh, including companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Boston Scientific, C.R. Bard and American Medical Systems, put a faulty product on the market, failed to properly warn patients about the risks associated with using vaginal mesh, and gave misleading information that the product was safe.
Many women have already been successful in their claims that the vaginal mesh caused debilitating injuries and took a serious toll on their quality of life. And, as previously mentioned, the FDA also prohibited further sales of vagina mesh after determining that not only were these devices harming women, but there was not adequate evidence to show that vagina mesh was safe and would provide long term benefits in the first place.
If you or any woman you care about has suffered injuries as a result of vaginal mesh or transvaginal mesh, it is important to know that you deserve compensation for the injuries and pain you have suffered. You can participate in a mass tort claim—a claim in which many plaintiffs sue a corporate defendant, but receive individualized treatment based on the specific facts and harm suffered in their case. To get more information about possible claims you may have, you should talk to a Woodland Hills Vagina mesh injury attorney right away, serving all of Los Angeles, California and our nation.
